This thing is great for flux core steel. I am a beginner welder, and I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a welder right out of the gate. It’s wonderful to be able to weld steel for so little money, and on a regular 110 volt circuit. I had literally never welded before I bought this machine. I have now crafted several projects with this, and with a minimal of practice really feel like I have dialed it in to get some pretty nice-looking and strong welds. Keep in mind that flux core welding will never yield the much-desired “stacked dimes” look, so if you are hung up on such things then you’d best look for a welder that allows gas shielding. But if you are happy with less attractive welds (by the commonly accepted definition), I highly recommend this welder.The included mask and brush/hammer tool are pretty worthless. It’s nice that they include them, and the mask would be good for observers or helpers, but you’d really better get a mask or helmet that can mount to your head to work with. Holding the handle of the mask while welding would really be a pain. And the hammer/brush combo doesn’t feel very durable, nor does it have enough weight to really be very adequate. I am not reducing stars on my rating for these things, because these are really just bonus items.

Ok so let’s get this out in the open. This welder is not a Miller or a Lincoln, so therefore it will not perform anywhere near a true MIG 220v big boy welder. And once you know this and have that in mind when using this, it will become one of the the most agile and badass welder a for the money. I’ve done some 1/8″ plate and angle iron. And it handled it with ease. I used up about 90% of the roll of wire that it came with in about 15 minutes. And the welder kept going without skipping a beat. Now compare this to a FDS or zeny no name Chinese AC cycle welder, this thing blows them out of the water. I bought one and regret buying it, I even went to the extent of putting a rectifier and capacitors in my original 110v flux core welder, and it helped. But it still can’t compare to this Forney easy weld 299.You can get very decent results from this welder, and it can do pretty heavy metal. But do know that there are limitations. This is not the type of welder that should be relied on for heavy duty repairs or projects. It will do 1/4″, but you will lack the penetration you need for a job that requires 1/4″ steel. An example of this, if you have to weld a pickup truck’s frame, this may not be the most suitable choice. Also it’s all in the prep work, prep and clean your material you plan to weld. No dirt, grease, or grime. Wire brush/grind the area, make sure you have a good ground for your ground clamp. Once you’ve done this, then this welder can do almost any light to medium duty job. I’m not a welder by trade, but have been welding for most of my life and have friends who are. And I have the ability to use very heavy duty name brand machines whenever I need to. But for the hobbiest, homeowner, mechanic, or handyman, and even the artists out there. This welder would definitely be a good addition to your toolbox.I’ve posted some pictures of some of the trial and error beads with this welder, just so some of you can see how it does. And just a side note, my welder came on the day specified, and was not damaged in any way shape or form. All descriptions and specifications in the listing have thus far matched the welder to a T. I will be updating this when I finish building a roof rack for a Ford F-350. I hope that my review can at least inform you enough in your decision, but as I said before, please stay away from the AC current flux core welders, they really are terrible and a waste of money.

I’m not a great welder, I’m sort of new to wire feed and still learning. This seems to work well and a bit more forgiving than the small coil that came with my Hobart Handler 190. (this larger .045 vs original .030 or .035 might be the difference) Slag seems pretty minimal and removes very easily. I did have to drill out one of my tips because I didn’t have any for larger wire like this.I was lucky in that the price was cut because of minor box damage. Getting a full new coil of this for just under $17 shipped makes it an even sweeter deal.

I purchased this as a gift for my sister just graduating Welding classes. She loves it! I helped unpack it and it’s a very clean nice looking machine. For a modest priced wire welder – it works well. Once I used up the small spool of wire that came with it I switched to Blue Devil .035 flux-core. Like all such welding wires you need to deal with the splatter. Carefully clean what your going to weld to bright, shiny metal and this unit will do the job. Just getting what you pay for these days is a bit of a challenge. This unit, without a doubt, delivers for the price you pay. Wire feeds smoothly and the arc is big, fat and hot. Give yourself plenty of test runs to get the hang of it. If you’re an experienced welder, you’ll quickly recognize what it is capable of and have no problems. 1/4 inch plate and square tubing can be done easily if you work it at the right speed. Since you only have high and low temperature settings, you don’t have the flexibility of more expensive welders that have 4 settings or better yet are completely variable.I have some doubts about recommending this as a first welding tool unless you’re willing to spend time learning how to use it properly. Check out YouTube – there are lots of great videos to get you started on flux-core MIG welding. This is my first welder and I worked very carefully with it until I could do things right. Now I have moved up to a higher-powered unit that supports gas.One thing for sure – it’s a heck of a lot better than the cheap stick welders most people pickup to learn to weld with. Excellent beginner to mid user welder, MIG 175 160AMP 110V Saved me $100+ so far, with just one projectItem arrived physically damaged by the shipping company but luckily I was able to have it fixed since the item was out of stockI purchased the MIG 175 160AMP 110V which is currently not listed, maybe it’s just out of stock right now- This is an Excellent beginner to mid user welder- After some practice I was able to weld my exhaust, I am still learning so I don’t have very good welds yet but the welds have been holding up really well so far.- Saved me $100+ so far, with just one project- This is 110V but my circuit breaker I connected it to in my garage is a 15 AMP and if you turn this up all the way it will trip it with constant use, you may need to tap into a 20 AMP circuit to be safe or turn it back down 1 notch- The mask as expected is not very good it’s pretty difficult to see through it, so make sure you have plenty of light on your work piece- Comes with a nice small spool of flux wire, wire brush, extra electrodes and fuses, mine did not come with any instructions or a manual but if you email the company they will send you them via email if needed- I practiced for a while before welding my muffler and still do not have it perfect yet, too much heat or too long in one spot and you burn through your work piece, not enough and it does not produce a good weld. Good value! I bought this welder a few months ago, because I wanted a lower-powered flux core/optional gas mig machine to weld thinner metals (<10 gauge or 1/8″). This welder really performs! Right out of the box, I tested it with 12″x12″ 18- and 16-gauge steel strips, just to dial in the settings and to see how even the weld puddles would be at the lower settings. I am impressed by the reasonable quality of this welder at this price point. It seems pretty well made for the money (<$330), the instructions are OK, the setup was easy, and you get everything you need to do out-of-the-box flux core gasless welding—or with solid wire & C25 gas (bottle and gas not included) you can do FCAW with nicer weld puddles/beads. I run Hobart .030 flux core or .024 solid wires. I’ve personally only tried this welder, over the last few months, with 20-gauge to 3/8″ mild steel (multiple passes on the 3/8″, but it does work). The truth is, 3/8″ steel is really pushing the limits on this welder, but it does work, regardless of what other people will tell you. However, that said, I would purchase this welder only if you are occasionally doing 3/16″ and primarily 20-gauge to 1/8″ steel. (I use a 180-amp welder to do regular 3/16″ to 1/4″ steel with multiple passes.) So this welder is perfect for the DIY person who is dealing with 1/8″(10-gauge) steel or thinner. Stay within the parameters of this welder’s power and you will be pleased.

Found this unit cheaper after purchase, but I’m not mad! I love this thing! Would be nice to add gas if I so choose, but I’m not knocking this welder at all. I’ve put over 20 rolls of 2# wire thru it and welded up to 3/4″ steel (that requires some knowledge of welding and knowing what you’re doing since penetrating 3/4″ isn’t gonna happen on a flat to flat project). I love this welder though and I would recommend for beginners or professionals alike.
Choosing a flux core welding machine is recommended as it offers lower cost than the MIG welder. It can be used even in a dirty environment, field work as it is easier to carry and work. It can weld half inch thick steel with one pass.
